I’m sure we’re all more than familiar with the blind panic that comes with realising that you’ve forgotten to pick up a gift for something, or somebody, important. Rather than getting yourself all worked up over what to do, why not plan ahead a little, and keep yourself prepared for those pesky gift emergencies. Here are a few of my tips and tricks to keep you sorted.
Pre-buy Generic Gifts
This might seem a little bit on the cold-hearted side, but sometimes you just simply won’t have the time to put into finding or preparing a very personal gift. While I could never recommend doing this for important occasions like a partner’s birthday or anniversary (these should always be incredibly personal gifts), they can be a reliable choice for acquaintances or people who don’t play a significant role in your life. I like to keep a small cupboard stocked with things like candles, ornaments and the like, just in case they’re needed.
Keep a Stock of Gift Making Supplies
Rather than falling back on your macaroni art skills, it is a good idea to keep around a few bits and pieces that will be useful if you decide to make your own gifts. Things like ribbons, notebook paper, white candles and a good craft glue, will all come in handy and they don’t take up too much room. Even a very last minute, cobbled together homemade gift will often be more appreciated than a panic buy from your local supermarket.
Use Social Media
One of the hardest parts of buying a gift for someone that you don’t know too well is trying to work out what they actually like. Even when you are organised and plan to pick up the gift well in advance, you might be at odds as to what to actually buy. The digital age is here to be your saviour, so don’t be afraid to do a little bit of research on social media to find out what they really like. With just a few minutes of browsing their social media accounts, you should be able to get a clearer idea of what sort of things they like and what they might appreciate as a gift. Say goodbye to the days of generic last-minute purchases, you’ll be known everywhere as the perfect gift buyer.
